Pickens's Location
- Fort Pickens is located just outside the Pensacola harbor in Florida
- Union Lieutenant Slemmer refused to surrender after Florida seceded
- This made it very possible that
Civil War would explode at Pickens
- However, Pickens was not located at
the center of the Pensacola harbor, unlike Sumter in the Charleston
- Because of its location, Pickens
could be reinforced with ease
- This is a reason battle did
not begin at Pickens
- If the fort could be easily resupplied with more men and
artillery, it would not be wise to try to capture the
fort
- This is especially true when the governor of Florida decided that “The possession of
the fort is not worth one drop of blood to us”
